Religious music, sacred music, church music, liturgical music, spiritual music ...so many terms all referring, sometimes with a subtle difference, to this universal subject which, for over ten years, has brought the hill of Vézelay to life for a few days during summer.
Last year – which was their tenth anniversary, celebrated with great success thanks to your loyalty – les Rencontres Musicales de Vézelay passed a new milestone. By your presence and your passion you have encouraged us to offer you even more emotion, more discoveries and rediscoveries. So this year we have opted to programme an anthology of this universal phenomenon - religious expression in western music.
The eleventh Rencontres Musicales de Vézelay proposes a panorama ranging from Catholicism to Protestantism crossing through the Russian Orthodox Church, from 18th century Venice to early 20th century Russia. This year we invite you to hear music from all of these three Christian confessions spanning more than three centuries. As usual the great masterpieces will come alongside rare pieces, and monumental productions will find an echo in more intimate moments.
