A corner of eternity
At the start of this 10th edition of the Rencontres Musicales de Vézelay, the Conseil Général de Yonne is very happy to be associated with this musical rendezvous which has become a must of the burgundian summer season.
Our pleasure is all the more enhanced by the fact that these, the tenth Rencontres, are at the heart of the 30th anniversary celebrations of Vézelay being listed by UNESCO as world heritage; an anniversary that our community is celebrating on a level in keeping with the occasion.
To celebrate this event, I wish to underline the excellence of the programme and the artistic choices made by the organizers. During these four days the works of the composer George Friedrich Handel will be given all the honours. This composer, who along with J.S. Bach, brought baroque music to its height, will make Vézelay glow. Recognizable by the energy which emanates from his music, his style combines the brio of Italian inspiration, the French majesty and the intensity of themes from the Age of Enlightment, the sense of organization and counterpoint of the Germans. These qualities reflect the image and the vocation of the Rencontres Musicales, which is to reach towards Universality.
Vézelay welcomes each and every one, welcome to the Yonne. May these Rencontres leave you with a small piece of eternity.
