Whether you are an experienced conductor or still training in a particular branch of music, why not join us on this exceptional summer school? Become one of the privileged participants of our Choral Conducting Course which will take place in the unique artistic ambiance of the Rencontres Musicales de Vézelay Festival in the Yonne region of Burgundy (2 hours and a half from Paris or from Lyon), from 17th to 23rd August 2009.
This exceptional course, under the aegis of Pierre Cao (Artistic Director), with Director of Studies Claire Marchand, offers an opportunity to study works which will subsequently be performed during the Festival by prestigious ensembles from all over Europe.
You will be able to meet conductors, singers and players, attend rehearsals and concerts and conduct some of these works yourself under the guidance of Pierre Cao, Artistic Director of the Rencontres Musicales de Vézelay Festival.
You will meet and work with the following ensembles and conductors
Collegium 1704 from Prague, conductor Vaclav Luxs
The Chelycus ensemble, and Dorothee Mields, soprano
The Kölner Kammerchor, conductor Peter Neumann
The medieval ensemble Gothic Voices
The Arsys Bourgogne choir, conductor Pierre Cao.
Repertoire
We have chosen the following works from amongst those to be performed at the Festival:the Haendel’s oratorios La Resurrezione, Theodora, Israël in Aegyptum, motets from Schütz, Rosenmüller, Buxtehude, Johann-Christoph Bach, medieval Virgin pieces from North Europe - Hildegard, Dunstaple, sacred music from the XXth century…
Course participants are expected to have prepared excerpts from these works, to be chosen by the Director of Studies and conveyed to participants two months before the start of the course.

Claire Marchand, Director of Studies
Holder of a ‘Premier Prix’ in choral conducting both at the Luxemburg Conservatoire and at the International Choral Conducting School in Namur - Belgium, Claire Marchand teaches choral singing and conducting in Paris. For 25 years now, she has lent her universally acclaimed teaching skills to choral conducting classes to educate a lot of young professionals. She runs specialised courses in fields such as tuition and the direction of children’s choirs.
Course timetable
The course will consist of work sessions with Claire Marchand (conducted in French or in English), both in a class setting and with the high level 12 singers Intermezzo practice choir; attendance at rehearsals of ensembles performing at the festival; discussion groups with their conductors; and one conducting class with Pierre Cao.
There are eight places for full participants (conducting), and ten for audience participants (listening).
Qualifications
Full participants: applicants should have a ‘State Diploma’ or a conservatoire Diploma (Equivalent to the French Diplôme d’Etat – DE, or Certificat d’Aptitude - CA), or their equivalent, in choral conducting, or be enrolled in the choral conducting last level at a recognised conservatoire; failing that, they should be able to demonstrate conducting skills of a very high standard (attach your CV).
Audience participants: applicants able to demonstrate conducting skills of a high standard may attend all the course sessions, including discussions with visiting conductors, but will not have the opportunity to conduct.
Financial conditions
Teaching fees (full participants): 330€
The fees include all working sessions on the course and second category tickets for all the evening concerts at the Vézelay Basilica.

Board and lodging (optional)
Information on accommodation of all kinds can be obtained from the Vézelay Tourist Office (Tel: +33 (0) 3 86 33 23 69).
Otherwise the course organisers can provide more modest room-sharing accommodation, with communal bathrooms and toilets. The cost for six nights is 120€.
Meals: the organisers also provide meals at the canteen for those who wish. The cost for 11 meals and 6 breakfasts (from dinner on Monday 17th to breakfast on Sunday 23rd inclusive) is 200€.
