The Rencontres Musicales
de Vézelay are ten years old !
Lots of innovations each day for the tenth anniversary of this festival which has become one of the most sought after summer rendezvous for European vocal music-lovers :
- a workshop for children (5–15 years of age) for discovering the voice
- a musical performance for babies and expectant mothers
- musicians in a hot air balloon in the sky over Vézelay
- hot air balloon trips for everyone to hear the music from the sky
- musical and heritage walks, with a guide, for novel visits of Vézelay, Asquins, Saint-Père and Avallon
- Zervos museum open free to all
- a lecture on the author and musicologist Romain Rolland and Handel
And as usual, the free concerts which bring alive the Place des Rencontres every day at
6 pm, amusing the crowd, taking them on a journey and making them dream ; for all ages, with world music, humour, jazz, or samba, always based around the voice, accompanied by a small glass of wine from the Vézelay vineyards !
Handel is this years’ invited composer on the Vézelay hill : a great choral and orchestral oratorio each evening at the basilica, and the more intimate afternoon concerts, with music from mediaeval times to today.

Discovering the voice workshop
Children between the ages 5 -15
The Rencontres Musicales de Vézelay wish to become more accessible to the young public. Professional musicians who are specialized in working with young children are offering a ‘Discovering the voice’ workshop. Getting to discover this extraordinary instrument which is the voice means talking, singing, sharing, playing, imitating, caricaturing, improvising, performing, pleasing others and enjoying oneself, and above all, learning to listen without barriers.
Every day from 3 to 5.30 pm, entrust your children to them. You could thereby make the most of the 4 pm concert then share their discoveries with them much to their delight.
Thursday 20th August: The voice - an instrument : transforming your voice, playing with sounds, improvising
Friday 21st August: Songs of the world : discover music from different countries, experiment vocal techniques belonging to each culture, imitate.
Saturday 22nd August: The accompanied voice : singing solo, in a choir, with instrumental accompaniment, performing.

Stimulate our babies !
Children 0 - 4 years old
and expectant mothers
Lingering moments leading to sleep.
More than a concert, this will be a moment for sharing between tiny-tots and their parents. The children will experience their first emotions linked to a live performance.
In the beginning the rushing of air; rain sticks, soft brushes skimming the drum skin, air in the mouthpiece, and whistling consonants? Silences…The sounds of the flute lengthen becoming sighs, the voice slides leading to murmured words.

Celestial Encounters
Hot air balloons
Music is a celestial art...So much so that the 10th Rencontres Musicales will be opened by musicians in a hot air balloon over the village ! A unique rendezvous not to be missed : Thursday 20th August before the 9 pm concert, music in the sky above Vézelay (subject to suitable weather conditions).
The following days it will be the reverse situation : every day you may fly over the basilica morning or evening and hear from the sky music coming from the village …

Music and Literature Encounters
Handel and Romain Rolland
The politically engaged author Romain Rolland (1866-1944) lived his last years at Vézelay. A renowned musicologist, he is acknowledged for a biography of Handel. The Romain Rolland Association invites you to a lecture on the Vézelay hill combining music and literature.
Saturday 22nd August from 11:00 to 12:00, basement hall of the Zervos museum.

A musical promenade with a guided commentary
Set out to discover the old streets of Vézelay, Avallon, Saint-Père and Asquins, and their hidden tresures.
Vézelay: every day between 11h30 am - 1 pm and 2 pm – 4pm. Starting from : place du Champs de Foire
Avallon: Thursday 20th August 11h30 am - 1 pm and 2 pm – 4pm. Starting from : in front of l’Hôtel de Ville
