2008 Programme
Passion and resurrection Pieces by Morales, Victoria, Taverner, Bird, de Lassus… Stile Antico An extract from one of the most beautiful musical miniatures of the first Baroque era dedicated to Easter time. The high quality of performance and the care taken in communicating their passion to the audience makes each concert given by the soloists of Stile Antico a grand event. A programme full of contrasts revolving around the English, French and Spanish Renaissance through pieces written for lent and Easter week by different European composers. The English insular tradition from the end of the 15th to the beginning of the 17th century, with composers traveling very little, brings a unique touch to English composition of this era : Gibbons, Browne, White and Byrd. On the other hand, continental composers had much traveled and their compositions reflected this : - the three Franco-Flemish composers: Jean Lhéritier, Pierre de Manchicourt and Orlando de Lassus, went from Arras to Italy, from Tours to Spain, from Rome to Munich. - Christobal de Morales, singer at the papal chapel, traveled everywhere in Europe. Tomas Luis de Vitoria stayed mainly in Rome. Only Alonso Lobo stayed in his native country. - Finally, King Joäo IV of Portugal himself composed for his own country. A concert of the most beautiful musical miniatures of the first Baroque era dedicated to Easter time.
