Between drama and liturgy, from Hambourg to Leipzig
G Major Mass BWV 236 by JS Bach, Oratorio der Tag des Gerichts by GF Telemann

Rheinische Kantorei
Conductor: Hermann Max

Where the dazzling demonstration of contrapuntal virtuosity of the Mass by J.S. Bach comes along side the dramatic power of the Oratorio of his colleague and friend G. P. Telemann.  Two authentic masterpieces brought to us by an ensemble whose every recording is a reference in the matter.
The G Major Mass BWV 236 is a Lutheran Mass, probably composed before 1742. A parody mass, as often it was the practice at this era, as numerous “self borrowings” from the BWV 17, 79, 138 and 179 cantatas are made by Bach. These are magnificent pages with the Kyrie in fugue, and instruments playing colla parte, the joyful Gloria (where the horns of the BWV 79 cantata are replaced by the soprano and contralto) where the orchestra gains importance, followed by the Gratias, the Domine Deus, the Quoniam, before ending with the jubilatory Cum Sancto Spirito.

Der Tag des Gerichts, The Day of Judgment, a late work of the composer (1762) in 4 contemplations, is an authentic masterpiece, a real opera composed in the form of an oratorio, with an orchestra of phenomenal dramatic weight. The composer bases the oratorio on concepts of drama, expression, sensitivity and vocal animation, with a real union between literature and music. The powerful plot is the following: the day of the last judgment has arrived. The people on earth fear the dreadful wreath of God. Certain are feeling doubtful or critical, others hide behind Christian moral and the protection of religious values. Court and chapel are as one.
