(The Last Judgement)

2008 Programme

Thursday 21st August 2008
9 pm in Vézelay (Sainte-Marie-Madeleine Basilica)

Music at the Sistine Chapel
Allegri, Marenzio, Palestrina …

The Sixteen
Conductor: Harry Christophers

With this concert the splendours of the Sistine Chapel, the queen of European chapels, are brought to the Vézelay basilica, whose vaults echo the sublime roman harmonies carried by  The Sixteen, the most famous performers of this repertory.
In 1550 the bishop of Palestrina’s hometown is elected Pope under the name of Julius III and invites the composer to follow him to the Holy See : he is appointed director of music of Saint Peter’s Basilica in Rome. The Pope Paul IV insists on the resignation of artists having written secular works (madrigals), which is the case of Palestrina. Consequently, he must leave the Vatican.

In April 1594, Pope Clement VIII appointed Felice Anerio to replace Palestrina as official composer of the papal choir, the most in sight post in Rome for a composer.

As for Gregorio Allegri, he studied music with Giovanni Maria Nanino, a very close friend of Palestrina, entering the St. Louis le Francais Chapel in Rome in 1591. He composed a great number of motets and other pieces of religious music which brought him to be noticed by the pope Urban VIII, who engaged him in the Sistine Chapel choir. Of a particularly pleasant nature, he is elected Master of the Chapel in 1650 and maintains this position until his death.
