Biography

La Fenice

The phénix - in Italian the fenice is, originally, this fabulous bird of the mythology who, having lived several centuries, wastes away before being reborn of its ashes. Symbol of the brilliance of the Italian music in Europe the baroque, Fenice was also the name of a work due to Giovanni Martino Cesare, cornetto player and composer who emigrated beyond the Alps at the beginning of XVII-th century.

It is today the name chosen by a group of musicians gathered by the cornetto player Jean Tubéry, animated by passion for the luxurious Venetian music of that time, while revealing it in the extraordinary vitality. The repertoire of the group extends nevertheless in all Europe, and over more than two centuries of music.

The cornetto was adopted indeed usually from the beginning of XVI-th century by Josquin-Des-Prez and his contemporaries, and it until J.S. Bach, who uses it in some of the cantatas. We can also ear the cornetto mixed with voices in the holy music during all the baroque period, as for example in the royal chapel of Versailles, which mentions it in the registers until 1733. " The sound which he returns, says the father Mersenne in his Harmonie Universelle (Paris, on 1636), is similar to the brightness of a sunbeam which appears in the shadow or in the darkness, when you hears it among voices in churches, cathedrals or chapels".

Wanting to respect original instrumentations, particularly in vocal music, the group adapts himself to the various programs of concerts which it is brought to give.

Stemming from complete Europe, the musicians of Fenice are all soloists internationally recognized who collaborate also with the best groups of ancient music.

The group gained from its debuts two international first prizes. It has played since in the biggest festivals in France Ambronay, la Chaise Dieu, Haut Jura, Limoges, Lourdes, Nantes (printemps des arts, la folle journée), Paris (festival d'Ile de France, festival d'art sacré, cité de la musique, les grands concerts sacrés), Sablé sur Sarthe, St Michel en Thiérache, Versailles – in Europe – Basel, Bremen, Brugges, Glasgow, Innsbruck, Lisboa, Milano, Oslo, Palermo, Utrecht, Wien –, and even further – United-States, Equador, Japan.

The recordings - Opus 111, Virgin Classics, Ricercar - are regularly given the highest distinctions (Choc Monde de la Musique, Diapason d'Or, 10/10. Répertoire, 5 Etoiles. Goldberg…).

La Fenice is supported by the French Ministry of Culture, Bourgogne region, Yonne department and Ville de Sens.
