The splendours of Saint Mark’s Basilica in Venice had a great influence on the Spanish cathedral composers in their works making use of space, echo, the sounds and the subtleties of unique compositions. This is a repertory which is which we don’t often have the occasion to hear. 6 pm in Vézelay (Rencontres's Place) Free concert : the vocal sextet Amarcord will take us on a journey in music from the Renaissance to famous songs of today, with charm, humour and a homogeneity that will take your breath away. 9 pm in Vézelay (Sainte Marie-Madeleine Basilica) Beethoven’s Missa Solemnis The Czech Philharmonic choir from Brno and the Lorraine National Orchestra - conducted by Pierre Cao Soloists : Olga Pasichnyk, soprano - see biography Marianne Beate Kielland, alto - see biography Markus Schäfer, tenor - see biography Hubert Claessens, bass - see biography Beethoven’s greatest sacred work; a priceless historical and musical document. Rarely performed, its level of difficulty and its mineral beauty make each performance a unique event. Friday 24th August 2007 4 pm in Asquins (Church) Byzantine Orthodox Music The University choir of Ias (Roumania) - conducted by Adrian Sarbu We cannot talk of sacred music from faraway without mentioning the richness of the Orthodox repertory. The age-old Byzantine traditions will de presented by an exceptional Roumanian choir, which has been dedicated for many years to the diffusion of these mystical songs. 6 pm in Vézelay (Rencontres's Place) Free concert : a vocal journey full of humour and different moods, and a guaranteed jazzy feeling with the group Indigo. 9 pm in Vézelay (Sainte Marie-Madeleine Basilica) Vivaldi’s Gloria, Handel’s Dixit Dominus conducted by Michel Corboz This concert will be the chance to rediscover masterpieces of the choral repertory: Vivaldi’s Gloria and Handel’s Dixit Dominus, two enormous tableaux of Baroque music. This explosion of vocal and instrumental music will be under the leadership of a conductor who earned an international reputation mainly for his interpretation of these works. Saturday 25th August 2007 4 pm in Saint-Père (Church) Sacred music of today Musicatreize Vocal ensemble – conducted by Roland Hayrabedian Programme : Olivier Messiaen - O sacrum convivium Jean-Louis Florentz - Asmara Francis Poulenc - Salve Regina Jean-Louis Agobet - La Voix Claire György Ligeti - Lux Aeterna Jean-Marc Singier - Psaume 68/67 (creation) Un brillant concert où alternent les chefs-d’œuvre de Messiaen, Poulenc et Ligeti avec ceux de la jeune génération si féconde, exécutés par un des tout premiers chœurs de musique contemporaine promu « ensemble de l’année » aux dernières Victoires de la musique classique. 6 pm in Vézelay (Rencontres's Place) Free Concert : using only their voices and percussion, the six male voices of Lo Còr de la Plana are going to rant and rave about all that can be given to hear in their town and the modern world, resonated in their traditional Occitan songs. 9 pm in Vézelay (Sainte Marie-Madeleine Basilica) Handel’s Messiah Arsys Bourgogne choir and Les Folies Françoises conducted by Pierre Cao Soloists : Hendrickje Van Kerckhove, soprano - see biography Robin Blaze, alto - see biography Markus Schäfer, tenor - see biography Kay Stiefermann, bass - see biography The heights of Handel’s artistry, the oratorio The Messiah soon became one of the symbols of sacred vocal art. Following the success gained on the European scene by Pierre Cao and the Arsys Bourgogne choir, this performance at Vézelay is already being anticipated to be one of the most intense moments of les 2007 Rencontres. Sunday 26th August 2007 11 am in Vézelay (Sainte Marie-Madeleine Basilica) The Arsys Bourgogne choir - directed by Pierre Cao Musical participation at Mass in the Basilica 1 pm in Vézelay (Rencontres's Place) Closing of les Rencontres Musicales Don't miss... Vézelay in the festival spirit ! During four days the village will be in the festival spirit. The magic of music, the magic of the setting, several encounters will be offered to the visitor every day in the streets and on the place Borot which will become la Place des Rencontres (Place of Encounters) for the length of the Festival: - 11.30 am – 1 pm and 2.30 pm – 4 pm: itinerant traditional music in Vézelay between the Place du Champ de Foire and the Basilica square - 6 pm : a vocal journey full of humour, different moods and a guaranteed jazzy feeling…whilst sampling a glass of ‘vezelian’ wine Musical lectures / debates |
