Biography

Kay Stiefermann
Baryton

Kay Stiefermann was born in Düsseldorf. He studied with Kammersänger Kurt Moll and in 2000 graduated with distinction. He attended Masterclasses with Kammersänger Hans Hotter and Montserrat Caballé.

He was member of the Hamburg State Opera from 1997 to 2001, where he could be heared in the parts of Papageno in „Die Zauberflöte“, Ping in, Turandot“, Danilo in “Die lustige Witwe” and Schaunard in “La Bohème”. With the beginning of the season 2001/02 he is member of the Wuppertal Opera. Here his parts include the title-role in Mozart’s “Don Giovanni”, Guglielmo in “Cosi fan tutte”, Barbiere in “Il Barbiere di Siviglia”, Dandini in “La Cenerentola”, the title-role in “Eugen Onegin”, Sharplessin “Madama Butterfly”, Eisenstein in “Die Fledermaus” and Albert in Massenet’s “Werther”.

Don Giovanni was a part he also created at the Komische Oper Berlin and the Opera houses of Hannover and Erfurt. He sang Britten’s Midsummer Night’s Dream (Bottom) at the Nationaltheater Mannheim. He also made guest appearances at the Deutsche Oper Berlin, the Hamburg State Opera, at the Opera National du Rhin, Strasbourg and at the Operafestival in
Savonlinna. In the summer of 2004 he made his debut in the title-role of Alban Berg’s “Wozzeck”.

He frequentely appears on the concert-platform in Germany and abroad, e.g. with Helmuth Rilling at the Casals Festival (Puerto Rico), at the Oregon Bach Festival (USA), the Europäischen Musikfest in Stuttgart, the BBC Proms in London, the Bregenzer Festspiele, at the Brucknerfest Linz and the Lucerne Festival. He worked with Philippe Herreweghe, Ulf Schirmer, Marcus Creed and Andreas Spering.

He also gave song-recitals in Cologne, Duesseldorf, Mainz, Baden-Baden and Hamburg. Available CD’s with Kay Stiefermann include Handel’s Opera “Imeneo”, conducted by Andreas Spering, Albert Lortzing’s Oratorio “Die Himmelfahrt Jesu Christi”, conducted by Helmuth Froschauer, Schubert’s “Mass in A-flat-major” (Orchestre de la Chapelle Royale, Philippe Herreweghe) and Handel’s “Messiah”.
